The changing face of farming in Lower Saxony
As in other branches of industry, farming in Lower Saxony has also experienced big changes over the years.
The average size of a farm has grown from about 16 hectares of farmed land in 1971 to more than 50 hectares in 2007. Technological advances have led to huge increases in productivity in the stall and on the field.
Even though agriculture in Lower Saxony is still characterised by family farms, modern farm managers see themselves increasingly as businessmen who understand at least as much about marketing and business administration as they do about production techniques.
